After numerous delays, the long-awaited Reading West Station upgrade initiative has finally opened, or at least all areas were fully open for the public this morning. The Reading Borough Council made the announcement today, confirming the completion of the initiative that began in October 2020.
The overhaul of the station, situated in Oxford Road, encompasses various enhancements aimed at improving safety and security for the local community and commuters. These improvements include new ticket gates, upgraded lighting, and the installation of CCTV cameras. Additionally, the new station building features an information counter, customer toilet facilities, and a space earmarked for potential retail ventures, though currently unoccupied. The project, which cost £5 million, slightly exceeded the initial estimated budget of £3.3 million. Collaboration between Reading Borough Council, Network Rail, and Great Western Railways facilitated the realization of this endeavor.
The project also incorporated the establishment of a new bus interchange, enhancements to cycle parking facilities, and the installation of pedestrian crossings. Furthermore, improvements have been made to the Tilehurst Road entrance as part of the comprehensive scheme.
Despite these advancements, our volunteer, Matthew Reynolds, noted during his visit this afternoon that the upgraded area was closed to the public, preventing him from accessing the interior. Nevertheless, he observed that the station’s exterior appeared aesthetically pleasing.
