Many construction projects in Reading are marred with delays, cost overruns and low satisfaction levels. Nevertheless, the situation at Reading West Station appears particularly striking due to the remarkable absence of communication emanating from the council.
The Reading West Station upgrade initiative, initiated in October 2020, is nearing completion.
Previously, the station could be accessed via stairways and ramps from entrances at Oxford Road and a single access point at Tilehurst Road.
As part of the upgrade, a completely new station building has been erected on Oxford Road. This structure will accommodate ticket purchasing facilities and a retail outlet. Originally slated for completion in early Spring, the project has encountered several delays, which is not uncommon.
Reading Borough Council, in collaboration with GWR and Network Rail, has been overseeing a £3.3 million endeavor to transform Reading West Station.
Numerous delays have arisen since the commencement of the project. GWR recently projected that the project would be completed by Spring 2023. While attempts to reach both the council and Great Western Railway for information about the readiness of the station have yielded no response, workers on-site have informed us that they anticipate completion by October to say the least.
