Reading Borough Council has added an extra splash of color to central Reading by giving the rainbow crossing a fresh makeover. Located on Friar Street, the traffic lights now showcase a vibrant crossing adorned in Pride colors, with additional updates introduced to commemorate Pride month.

Observant residents noticed preparations being made for the work on Tuesday, June 20, before council staff commenced the refreshing process later that evening.

Initially installed in 2019, the crossing featured the classic colors of the Pride flag. However, in its updated form, it now incorporates the colors from the Pride Progress flag, which encompasses additional hues representing transgender individuals and marginalized people of color.

The newly refreshed crossing proudly displays the white, pink, and blue stripes of the transgender flag, the brown stripe symbolizing marginalized communities of color, and the black stripe representing those affected by HIV and AIDS.

The decision to update the crossing was made following discussions with LGBTQ+ staff members at the council. This enhancement aligns with the upcoming return of Reading Pride’s Love Unites Festival, scheduled to take place at Kings Meadow in September.

By infusing the crossing with a broader spectrum of colors, Reading Borough Council celebrates inclusivity and diversity, acknowledging the importance of recognizing and honoring all individuals within the LGBTQ+ community. The refreshed rainbow crossing serves as a vibrant symbol of pride, acceptance, and unity in the heart of Reading.
