Reading Borough Council Leader to Step Down

The unexpected nature of this news has taken us by surprise, especially considering that we were anticipating resignations from certain councillors, whose names we are not at liberty to disclose.

After a five-year tenure as the leader of Reading Borough Council, Jason Brock is stepping down from his role. Additionally, he is resigning as the Labour councillor for the Southcote ward.

Upon his election in 2019, Mr. Brock privately acknowledged that approximately five years was a fitting duration for his leadership. He expressed gratitude for the honor and privilege of guiding the council, a position he will hold until the local elections in May.

Having first been elected as a councillor in a 2016 by-election, Mr. Brock assumed the role of council leader in May 2019. Throughout his leadership, he oversaw the construction of two leisure centers, the opening of Green Park station, and initiated what the council describes as “the largest council house building program in a generation.”

Recognizing challenging periods, including the impact of Covid and the 2020 Forbury Gardens terror attack, Mr. Brock commended the community for uniting during times of adversity. He remains deeply moved by the town’s response.

Expressing gratitude for his colleagues, encompassing communities, organizations, councillors, and deputy council leaders, Mr. Brock emphasized the council’s dedication to steering Reading toward its full potential. Despite economic challenges and growing inequalities, the council strives to ensure that everyone residing and working in Reading can partake in the benefits of its success.

Mr. Brock has demonstrated strong leadership during particularly challenging times. The admirable decision to step down and make way for others, especially considering he is likely one of our younger councillors whom the younger Redingensian population can relate to, won’t go unnoticed. Undoubtedly, he will be missed.
