Recent developments include the sanctioning of bus lanes across various stretches, encompassing London Road, Oxford Road, Bath Road, and Southampton Street.
The Reading Borough Council’s traffic management committee had to greenlight these lanes, leading to heated debates among councillors regarding potential traffic disruptions caused by the proposed changes.
Advocates emphasized that the introduction of these bus lanes aligns with the council’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions and addressing air quality concerns.
Councillor Rob White, the opposition leader from the Green Party representing Park, referred to council traffic modeling predicting a surge in morning traffic queues by 176 cars and evening queues by 107 cars due to the alterations.
Despite a majority of respondents opposing the changes during a statutory consultation, the official approval for six new bus lanes in Reading has been granted. The Local Democracy Reporting Service documented 116 written objections to the London Road bus lane (Liverpool Road to Cemetery Junction), with 45 written submissions supporting the initiative.
The implementation of these bus lanes is now slated to commence, with anticipated completion dates as follows:
A329 Oxford Road – outbound bus lane between Zinzan Street and George Street
A329 Oxford Road – outbound bus lane between Pangbourne Street and Norcot Junction
A4 Bath Road – outbound bus lane from Circuit Lane to Granville Road
A327 Southampton Street – inbound bus lane from Pell Street to The Oracle roundabout
A4 London Road – inbound bus lane between Sidmouth Street and London Street
A4 London Road – inbound bus lane between Liverpool Road and Cemetery Junction
