Fly-tipping incidents have increased in Reading West

Residents have been asking for zero tolerance approach to those who dump rubbish illegally for quite a few years.

Sadly things are getting worse and there has been a huge spike in fly-tipping in some parts of the UK (Reading included) during the coronavirus lockdown.

In Reading west (Battle Ward) the figures have increased dramatically over the last two months, with more than 30 cases (34 to be precise) during the months of April and May.

Looking at Love Clean Reading reports in April there were 18 incident alone & the rest happened in May, more than doubled, compared to the previous month, when only 7 incidents were reported in March.

One of the few reasons for the increase is commercial operators avoiding their legal responsibilities to dispose of their waste which costs them money. However, in Reading West, most of the incidents seems to be household fly-tipping.

Fly-tipping is illegal and some residents do not feel that the council makes any efforts to catch those responsible. It seems that their focus is on businesses when it should be in households. “Reading Borough Council should encourage or force residents to take responsibility for their waste” an Elm Park Road resident said.

Fly-tipping is an increasing social problem. Household or Commercial fly-tipping is becoming not only a social problem but also a huge financial headache for the residents that have to desl with the wadte that ends up on their property. Preventing fly-tipping works for the good of the local residents and the community.
